Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale (2010)
plot summary: ”In the frozen beauty of Finland, local reindeer herders race against the clock to capture an ancient evil: Santa Claus. A single dad and his son are caught up in the chaos as scientists dig for artifacts. What they find endangers the entire village.” - Netflix

IMDb: Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale

Available on Netflix Instant Stream? Yes, as of 1/12/14

Netflix rating: 3.6/5 stars

IMDb Rating: 6.8/10 stars

My Rating: 7/10 stars

Conclusion: I know it’s already past Christmas, but do yourself a favor and indulge in this anyway. Say goodbye to lame “heartfelt” holiday movies and hello to this Finnish tale of the REAL santa, the one that eats bad children. The film starts a little slow, but just hang on, it ends up being a fun little creepy christmas caper.

Dread (2009)

plot summary: “Assisted by two classmates, duplicitous Quaid conducts a devious research project examining students’ innermost fears. Armed with data, Quaid methodically torments his hapless subjects, taking full advantage of their weaknesses.” -Netflix

IMDb: Dread

Available on Netflix Instant Stream? YES as of 1/12/14

Netflix rating: 3.1/5 stars

IMDb Rating: 5.7/10 stars

My Rating: 6/10 stars

Conclusion: This film was genuinely interesting to me and I loved the concept of it. Of course, the concept could’ve been executed a lot better, but it ended up being at least an entertaining watch and a unique look into the mind of the what compels fears and phobias. My main beef with the film was that the entire plot of the movie was about testing people’s fears and one loon taking it too far, right? Except that seemed to take up very little of the actual film. More time was spent “building up” the characters and setting the stage to actually show the horror. I appreciated that the film didn’t dissolve into a complete blood bath (or at least until the last few minutes) But the overall build up didn’t feel like it was leading to anything in particular. The casting was pretty good and I liked the overall tone of the film. All in all, it was enjoyable. It probably won’t send you home to a night of sleeplessness, but the ideas from the film do stick with you a while.

Let The Right One in (2008)
Plot summary: “The constant target of bullies, 12-year-old Oskar spends his time plotting revenge and collecting news clippings about the grisly murders plaguing his town. But things change when he meets a new girl named Eli, a misfit vampire who steals his heart.” -Netflix.
IMDb: Let The Right One In
Available on Netflix Instant Stream? Yes
Netflix rating: 3.8/5 stars
IMDb Rating: 8.0/10 stars
My Rating: 4/5 stars
Conclusion: The original Swedish film based on the book and, in my opinion, far superior to the American remake. This one had more heart to it, and you felt a deeper connection and sorrow for the characters involved. The American version was a lot more about the gory end of the vampire story (which they displayed quite well, bravo, gore team) but the original focuses more on the developing relationship between Oskar and Eli. Do yourself a favor and watch both, they don’t feel like the same film AT ALL.

People think that I must be a very strange person. This is not correct. I have the heart of a small boy. It is in a glass jar on my desk. Stephen King
